Why are we Doing This?

Too often, decisions about what happens in communities happen without the people who live in those communities.

This year and next, we’ll work with a collaborative of local partners to listen and learn from residents about their needs and how to do a better job of supporting their well-being.

Homeownership, abandoned properties, community quality of life, and access to human services are challenges that have a direct impact on our daily lives. The Wilkinsburg Land Bank’s mission to reclaim vacant properties & increase access to homeownership for Wilkinsburg residents is just the start of why we’re undertaking this communitywide effort. We’re working with Wilkinsburg Borough to improve the quality of life in our community and provide people-first input as we plan for a greater community with the Wilkinsburg Comprehensive Plan. We’re partnering with the Wilkinsburg School District to grow attendance in our quality public schools. We’ll work with a range of local partner organizations to help connect residents to the resources they need at a time of massive federal cut-backs & increased red tape for recipients of SNAP & Medicaid benefits. Local human resource and health partners will help us connect residents to the resources and opportunities they need. We’ll also be learning together how to best prepare for the 2030 United States Census.
